Helping Homeless Veterans: Glenn Nye Donates $4,700 Pay Raise to Vetshouse

Virginia Beach, VA – November 11, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — When Congressman Glenn Nye (VA-02) opted to decline his annual pay raise, that was good news for one local veterans’ charity.

On the afternoon of Veterans Day, Nye stopped by Vetshouse, Inc. in Virginia Beach to donate the full $4,700 Congressional salary increase to help support homeless veterans in Hampton Roads.

I feel strongly that Members of Congress shouldn’t be receiving pay raises while the economy is struggling and countless Americans, including many veterans, can’t find jobs,” said Congressman Glenn Nye. “There’s a lot of work to do in Washington to help fight veterans’ homelessness, but it’s just as important to take action locally to support groups like Vetshouse that are helping homeless veterans every day.”

Congressman Glenn Nye serves on the House Veterans Affairs Committee and the House Armed Services Committee. He is the author of a bipartisan bill to provide assistance to veterans who are in danger of becoming homeless, and he has helped to increase funding for homelessness-prevention programs in the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Nye’s first official action in Congress was to cosponsor a bill to block the planned 2010 Congressional pay increase. Nye was ultimately successful in that effort, and Members of Congress will not be receiving an annual cost-of-living increase next year.

However, when Nye took office, he automatically received the 2009 salary increase that had been approved last year by the previous Congress. Instead of keeping the money, Nye decided to donate it to Vetshouse.

Vetshouse, Inc. is a nonprofit 501© (3) organization that provides housing, food, clothing, counseling and other assistance to homeless veterans of the US Armed Forces in order to facilitate their return to gainful, independent, responsible and productive lifestyles.
