“The Real Estate Tax Relief Program is one of the most important initiatives that my office offers”, McDonald said. “It’s important that we give back to the citizens who’ve given so much to this city”.
The program is available for seniors 65 years of age or older, and those who are totally and permanently disabled at any age.
Tax relief is granted each year based on household income.
The program continues to grow each year as Norfolk’s population ages. More than 400 new applicants have been added to the program this year alone. Currently, 4,784 households are participating in the program, of which 2,849 are receiving 100 % tax exemption.
The major objective of the program is to allow seniors to remain in their homes by reducing the real estate tax.
