Norfolk Helps Homeless, Residents Beat the Heat

-

July 13, 2011 – (RealEstateRama) — The Department of Human Services is opening its lobby at 741 Monticello Ave. today to homeless individuals and others in need of relief in response to the Extreme Heat Watch issued by the National Weather Service for the Hampton Roads region. In addition, all branches of the Norfolk Public Library will have their lobbies available to any citizens who need to get out of the heat.

Volunteers with the Office to End Homelessness will also be reaching out with bottles of cold water to homeless individuals.

Today’s high temperature is expected to reach 98 degrees with a heat index of 110 degrees.

Heat is the number one weather-related killer in the U.S. Citizens planning to be outdoors are advised to drink plenty of water, wear loose, light-colored clothing and remain in shaded areas as much as possible. Friends and relatives are urged to check on people, especially the elderly or those without air conditioning, who may be vulnerable to the extreme heat.
