Norfolk to hold workshop on how to apply for World Changers home repair program

December 28, 2011 – (RealEstateRama) — World Changers Norfolk is a partnership between the City of Norfolk and a ministry of the North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. The program provides exterior home repair opportunities to low and moderate income homeowners at no cost to them. Volunteers come during the summer for one week.

World Changers Norfolk projects will include only exterior improvements such as:

  • Porch renovations & repairs
  • ADA ramps design and construction
  • Removal & replacement of rotted/damaged exterior woodwork
  • Exterior painting (including foundation systems)
  • Exterior door replacements
  • Windowpane & trim replacements
  • Removal of dated awnings
  • Shutter repairs, replacements & painting

Qualifications
In Norfolk, Virginia, the following qualifications must be met to be considered for the program:

  • You must own your home and live in it.
  • Your household income must meet HUD guidelines of 80% or less of the median household income for your neighborhood.
  • If your income is above the stated range but there are other factors which impact your income (major medical bills, for instance) you may still qualify.
  • Property taxes and homeowner’s insurance must be up-to-date.
  • Duplexes will be considered if the owner lives in one side.
  • No other multi-unit dwellings will be considered.
  • In an effort to assist as many homeowners as possible, persons who have received World Changers’ assistance within the last three years (2008-2011) will not be eligible for consideration for the program.
  • Special consideration will be given to neighbors located within 3-4 blocks of one another, provided all other eligibility requirements are satisfied.
