Stafford, VA – May 21, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — The Rappahannock Regional Landfill invites Stafford and Fredericksburg residents to dispose of their household hazardous wastes – for free – on Saturday, May 30, 2015. The collection runs from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the landfill, located at 489 Eskimo Hill Road, Stafford, VA 22554.

“This is a free service that we provide to residents of both Stafford County and the City of Fredericksburg so that they can get rid of these hazards the right way and keep them from harming the environment,” said Chairman of the R-Board Matt Kelly. Mr. Kelly is also a member of the Fredericksburg City Council. The landfill recently re-earned its Exemplary Environmental Enterprise (E3) certification through the Virginia Environmental Excellence program. The certification is awarded to facilities with strong environmental records that go above and beyond their legal requirements.

“Educating the public about the proper disposal of household waste helps us in our continuous goal of environmental excellence,” Mr. Kelly said.

Household hazardous waste refers to used or leftover contents of consumer products that contain materials with one of the four characteristics of a hazardous waste: toxic, ignitable, corrosive or reactive. These products should not be thrown in the trash or recycled. Among the items included are bug spray, gasoline, oil-based paint, battery acid, mercury batteries, thermometers and others. However, some hazardous waste is accepted on a daily basis at the landfill – fluorescent bulbs, dry latex paint, motor oil, anti-freeze and auto batteries.

Residents are asked to package the waste carefully and bring it to the landfill. The landfill will dispose of the waste according to all local, state and federal regulations. For more information about Hazardous Waste Collection Day, visit www.r-board.org or call (540) 658-8680.
