Arlington County Celebrates Affordable Housing Month

WASHINGTON, D.C. – August 28, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — September is Affordable Housing Month in Arlington, a month-long celebration of the County’s long-term commitment to preserving and creating housing opportunities that benefit the whole community. Join us for bus and bike tours of affordable housing developments around the County, public forums to discuss housing challenges and an informational session covering services and programs available to residents.

“For decades, we have invested in our affordable housing programs to help us achieve our vision of a diverse and inclusive community,” said County Board Chair Mary Hynes. “These efforts support our residents at all ages and stages of life, improve our neighborhoods and strengthen our economy. This September, we will come together to celebrate our successes and discuss our challenges.”

 2015 Affordable Housing Month events include:

  • Kickoff Proclamation and Reception, Featured Speaker: Chris Estes, president and CEO, National Housing Conference
  • Affordable housing bus tour
  • Public forum on mixed-income housing
  • Informational session on resident services and affordable housing
  • Affordable housing bike tour
  • Leckey Forum on Affordable Housing, Presented by The Alliance for Housing Solutions

 Public hearings on Affordable Housing Master Plan

Also in September, the Planning Commission and County Board will hold public hearings on the Affordable Housing Master Plan and Implementation Framework. Based on three years of research and community engagement, the plan proposes a long-term vision for housing affordability.

The plan’s goals are to:

  • Provide an adequate supply of housing to meet community needs;
  • Ensure all segments of the community have access to housing; and
  • Contribute to our community’s sustainability
