Virginia residential real estate market continues growth trend Year-over-year growth contributes to Virginia economy

The Virginia residential real estate market continued year-over-year improvement according to the First Quarter 2016 Home Sales Report released by the Virginia Association of REALTORS® (VAR). Indicating sustained long-term growth, both the number of sales and the value of transactions rose from this period last year, totaling 20,771 units and $6.34 billion, respectively. The value of transactions for the first quarter of 2016 was 2.2 percent higher than the first quarter of last year, and nearly 15 percent higher than the first quarter of 2014.

Board Approves First Increase in Tenant Relocation Payment since 2004

The Arlington County Board today approved the first increase since 2004 in relocation payments for tenants who are displaced by housing demolition, substantial rehabilitation or conversion from residential to non-residential use. The increase takes effect July 1.

County Efforts Continue to Reduce Homelessness

For the third consecutive year, the number of persons who are homeless in Arlington has dropped, down 27 percent in January 2016 as compared to January 2015. The data comes from the community’s annual Point-in-Time Count. The total for the 2016 count was 174, down from 239 in 2015.

U.S. Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, along with Representatives Rob Wittman, Randy Forbes and Morgan Griffith, sent a letter to President Obama supporting Governor Terry McAuliffe’s request that the administration declare a major disaster declaration in response to the severe storm and deadly tornadoes on February 24, 2016. The storms impacted 12 localities in total and had a particularly destructive impact on Sussex, Appomattox and Essex Counties.
