WASHINGTON, D.C. – July 15, 2011 – (RealEstateRama) — U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall (D-W.Va.) Thursday announced two southern West Virginia housing programs will receive grant funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to provide housing assistance to homeless veterans.

“We owe our veterans a tremendous debt of gratitude for the sacrifice they made in service to our nation,” said Rahall.  “We must not allow any individual or family, and especially our veterans, suffer the pain and hardship of homeless.”

The Housing Authority of Raleigh County has been awarded $35,742, and the Housing Authority of Huntington will receive $56,209, under the HUD Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) program.

Huntington Housing Authority currently serves 70 veterans in about 10 counties surrounding the Huntington area.  This funding will provide rental assistance to 15 additional veterans, bringing the total number of homeless vets in the program to 85.  The Housing Authority of Raleigh County will use the funding to provide rental assistance to 10 additional homeless veterans, bringing the total number to 45.  The veterans who receive VASH vouchers are also receiving clinical services at the VA medical centers in Huntington and Beckley.

HUD-VASH program provides funding for rental assistance for homeless veterans with case management and clinical services provided by the VA at its medical centers in the community.  The HUD-VASH funding is awarded to public housing agencies that have agreed to partner with eligible VA medical facilities.
