Glen Allen, VA – September 7, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — The Virginia Association of REALTORS® (VAR) is encouraging Virginians to ready themselves for hurricane season as well as other disasters by making plans for how to stay safe and communicate during an emergency. Preparedness Month, observed nationwide in September, reminds Virginians to collect supplies as well as make and share a plan for the protection of their families, homes, and communities.

“REALTORS® are committed to the property interests of all Virginians and to the security of our communities. It is integral to our profession that we encourage thoughtful preparation for any potential disaster event that could impact our lives, neighborhoods and homes,” said VAR President Deborah A Baisden.

Since natural disasters can inhibit channels of communication such as internet and phone coverage, the first step to safety planning is to share your “in case of emergency” plan with relatives and friends now, and to be knowledgeable about the emergency plans at schools, work and living facilities where family members spend time. Thinking through potential dangers during Preparedness Month can prevent or lessen damage to homes and threats to personal safety. Knowing your family has a plan will ease anxiety for your children and loved ones if disaster hits. Virginians are encouraged to consider family members, pets, and the elderly, as well as transportation routes and property safeguards in developing an emergency plan of action.

To assist Virginians with all hazard disaster planning, the Virginia Department of Emergency Management and its Ready Virginia app offer resources that include check lists of essential supplies, step-by-step guides
for staying safe in emergency conditions, and instructions to stay informed of critical community updates. Take the time today to review these helpful tips then sit down with your family and “make a plan”.
