ARHA Opens Public Housing, Housing Choice Voucher Program Waiting Lists

Alexandria, VA – August 16, 2011 – (RealEstateRama) — The Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority (ARHA) is opening both its Public Housing and Housing Choice Voucher program waiting lists. These rental assistance programs, funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, are administered by ARHA for low-income households.

The Public Housing waiting list will be open to families that qualify for 2-, 3-, and 4-bedroom dwelling units only. Occupancy guidelines require at least two persons per bedroom. The Housing Choice Voucher program (formerly known as Section 8) waiting list will be open to all new applicants.

The waiting lists will be open from August 15 to 19. Applications will be available at alexandriava.gov/Housing and www.arha.us beginning August 15 at 10 a.m., and  may be submitted in one of four ways:

  • In person: Submit the application at: George Washington Middle School 1005 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria, VA 22301.  Applications submitted in person will be accepted from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., August 15 to August 19. To facilitate a safe and efficient process, the cut-off time for accessing the line to submit applications in person will be 3:15 p.m. each day.
  • By email: Download the application, print and complete it, then scan and email it to waitinglist (at) arha (dot) us
  • By fax: Download the application, print and complete it, then FAX it to 703.370.2297
  • By postal mail: Download the application, print and complete it, and send it to ARHA, 18 Roth Street, Alexandria Virginia 22314

Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit applications via email or FAX.

To request an application by mail, call 703.549.7115, ext. 207 and leave a clear message with name, address and phone number. Applications will not be available until 10 a.m. on August 15, and must be returned no later than 4:00 p.m. on August 19, 2011. Applications submitted via U.S. Postal Service must be postmarked by August 19, 2011.

Applicants will be considered for rental assistance based on meeting basic program requirements and will be placed on the waiting list by the date and time the application is received. Being accepted onto the waiting list does not guarantee receipt of rental assistance. For more information, visit www.arha.us.
