Governor McAuliffe Announces More Than $8.2 Million in Community Development Block Grants
Governor Terry McAuliffe today announced more than $8.2 million in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding for 12 projects in Virginia. Since 1982, the federally-funded CDBG program has been administered by the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD), and Virginia receives approximately $17 million annually for this grant program.
Former Virginia Short Sale Specialist Sentenced to Prison for Mortgage and Tax Fraud
An Ashburn, Virginia, resident was sentenced to prison today for mortgage and tax fraud, announced Acting Assistant Attorney General Caroline D. Ciraolo of the Justice Department’s Tax Division and U.S. Attorney Dana J. Boente of the Eastern District of Virginia.

SECOND QUARTER HOME SALES SURPASS $10 BILLION IN VIRGINIA
The Virginia residential real estate market experienced its strongest second quarter since the 2008 recession, with sales volume reaching nearly $10.6 billion during the April through June timeframe. This sales volume represents an 11 percent increase relative to the second quarter of 2014 ($9.5 billion), according to the Second Quarter 2015 Home Sales Report released by Virginia Association of REALTORS® (VAR).

The Fairfax County Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) is preparing to release the 2015 Affordable Housing Blueprint Funding Request for Proposals (RFP) for the development of affordable housing projects in Fairfax County. This opportunity is intended to address the goals and metrics set forth in the Fairfax County FY 2016 Housing Blueprint. This marks the first time Fairfax County will simultaneously release affordable housing funding and federal project-based vouchers for competition.

Justice Department Settles Disability-Based Housing Discrimination Lawsuit with West Virginia Developer
The Justice Department announced today that developer Biafora’s Inc. (Biafora) and several affiliated companies have agreed to pay $205,000 and make substantial retrofits to remove accessibility barriers at multifamily apartment complexes. This agreement resolves the United States’ claims that Biafora violated the Fair Housing Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act by building 23 apartment complexes in West Virginia and Pennsylvania with a variety of features that made them inaccessible to persons with disabilities.
Adding a Church to a Planned Residential Building
Third Avenue Investments, LLC won approval from the County Board on Saturday, July 18, for an amendment to a site plan originally approved in 2007 for a mixed-use building at 3001 Jefferson Davis Highway, Potomac Yard Land Bay D-West. The amendment will allow the developer to build a church in the 12-story residential building it plans, instead of much of the groundfloor retail approved in the original site plan.
Warner, Kaine Applaud Federal Recognition of the Pamunkey Tribe
U.S. Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine praised the announcement by the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) that the Pamunkey tribe will be granted federal recognition. Since serving as Governors of Virginia, Warner and Kaine have been strong supporters of the Virginia Indian tribes’ efforts to gain federal recognition
