Bi-lingual workshops, raffle, tips on avoiding foreclosure featured
ARLINGTON, Va. – With the nation’s housing market in a slump and credit tightening, many would-be buyers are looking for tips on how to make their dream of home ownership a reality.
Arlington County government can help!
Did you know there is a County program that offers up to $25,000 in down payment and closing costs assistance for moderate-income first-time home buyers? That there are special mortgage programs for Arlington County municipal employees (including local government, school board, and law enforcement officers)?
Learn about these and other programs at the County’s Twelfth Annual Homeownership Fair. The event, free and open to the public, will offer English and Spanish workshops on such topics as how to apply for a mortgage and how to prevent foreclosure. The County’s Department of Community Planning, Housing and Development and Arlington Home Ownership Made Easier (AHOME), an Arlington-based non-profit housing organization, are co-sponsoring the fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 8, 2008 at Patrick Henry Elementary School, 701 S. Highland St.
Participants will find a wealth of information about home-buying, home-financing, and County and State programs available to assist low-and-moderate-income first-time home buyers. Other features include:
- Information on Virginia Housing Development Authority (VHDA) Sponsoring Partnerships and Revitalizing Communities (SPARC) low-interest mortgage program.
- More than 15 exhibits by mortgage lenders, realtors, Department of Housing and Urban Development, VHDA, and non-profit housing organizations.

Arlington, Va., is a world-class urban community that was originally part of the “10-mile square” parcel of land surveyed in 1791 to be the Nation’s Capital. It is the geographically smallest self-governing county in the United States, occupying slightly less than 26 square miles. Known for its urban villages and transit-oriented development, Arlington maintains a rich variety of stable neighborhoods, quality schools and enlightened land use. In 2002, the county was the first recipient of the Environmental Protection Agency’s highest award for “Smart Growth.” Home to some of the most influential organizations in the world – including the Pentagon – Arlington stands out as one of America’s preeminent places to live, visit and do business.
