WASHINGTON, D.C. – January 28, 2013 – (RealEstateRama) — Given the potential for severe road conditions late this afternoon and early evening because of the forecast snow, City Manager Mary Bunting said all evening activities for the city will be canceled, including those provided by all libraries and recreation centers.
“Also, to ensure the safety of our personnel, I am authorizing the release of all non-essential personnel at 2:30 p.m. today,” Bunting said. “Please travel safely on your way home.”
Hampton school officials also canceled all extracurricular activities Friday.
The city manager noted that the Department of Public Works has been pre-treating arterial roadways and bridges with brine to help keep roads safe, and work crews are ready to respond today and tomorrow.
The National Weather Service in Wakefield, Va. has said that Hampton should start seeing snow flurries between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. The snow is expected to last until 10-11 p.m. tonight, with a forecast accumulation of about 2 inches.
The Office of Emergency Management will continue to coordinate city response efforts, staying in contact with Public Works and Public Safety. And the non-profit HELP program, designed to aid the homeless and those in crisis by providing shelter, food and other assistance, opened early.
Saturday is expected to be mostly clear. Sunday is expected to be sunny with a high near 37.
