Clark Realty’s Project Team Honored for Efforts Made in Sustainable Design
WILLIAMSBURG, Va., September 18, 2007 – The Virginia Sustainable Building Network (VSBN) honored Clark Realty’s Fort Belvoir family housing development with the “Best Residential Green Innovation Award” at a ceremony held on June 28, 2007 in Williamsburg, Va. The award commends Clark Realty’s use of environmentally friendly products, energy efficiency, promotion of green building, and utilization of sustainable development principles.
VSBN brings together representatives from diverse business sectors who are interested in building healthy, environment friendly buildings and sustainable communities. Each year, outstanding organizations and businesses from across Virginia are nominated by the VSBN members for exemplary environmental initiatives; winners are then voted upon by the board of directors.
“After reviewing the Fort Belvoir project, the VSBN Board created a special category for the 2007 Green Innovation Awards,” said Annette Osso, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) AP president for VSBN. “Since Fort Belvoir very successfully combined elements of new urbanism and green building initiatives like Energy Star homes, the Board wanted to recognize their accomplishments with a ‘Residential Community Development’ award. Projects such as this one can be a model for eco-friendly developments around the state.”
Clark Realty Capital, who is developing the Fort Belvoir family housing community in a public-private venture with the U.S. Army, has implemented several initiatives that comply with green building standards. Such efforts include recycling of construction materials, reuse of demolition debris, and installation of an innovative storm water management system, which minimizes the impact of development on the new communities and surrounding wetlands. In addition, the project team worked with tree preservation experts to protect mature trees and transplant smaller trees for re-use in Fort Belvoir communities.
“Our investment into green building and sustainability not only improves public health and the environment,” said Tom Boylan, a LEED Certified development associate with Clark Realty Capital, “but also benefits the consumer with higher quality of life and lower energy costs.”
Fort Belvoir has repeatedly been honored for taking steps in Green Building and sustainability initiatives. Recently, the project won the Virginia Environmental Stewardship Award, Congress of New Urbanism Award, and Outstanding Federal Planning project.
