New listing promotes publicly-owned property

WASHINGTON, D.C. – January 17, 2012 – (RealEstateRama) — The city of Hampton is compiling information about publicly-owned properties that are available for sale in the city. The new website listing will put information such as maps, current zoning, assessed value and any master plan guidelines in one convenient location.

The site information includes properties that are “waiting for the right proposal” and links to the city’s process for submitting unsolicited proposals for the purchase of city land. It includes properties owned by the city itself, as well as the Hampton Economic Development Authority and the Hampton Redevelopment and Housing Authority. Property held by the school division will be added in the future.

Information on city-owned real estate has always been publicly available, but it was not always easy to find, and the data did not provide the details necessary to quickly evaluate the development potential. The new website listing provides the user with marketing fliers similar to those used by the real estate industry. This makes the site a user-friendly, one-stop shop for businesses or developers seeking new land for expansion or development.

This gives the city’s Economic Development Department, which recruits and grows businesses, another tool, noted Mike Yaskowsky, interim director of the department. “In an older developed city, it is crucial that the public sector help acquire and compile sites suitable for the right kind of development that offers the best opportunities. It is just as crucial that we make that land available for the private sector to seize those opportunities.”

Councilman Chris Stuart has publicly advocated for such a resource at several City Council meetings. “I am excited that the city now has an avenue for residents and others interested in city-owned property to know what’s there,” Stuart said. “There is now a singular, all-inclusive location for listings of developable land in Hampton.”

The timing couldn’t be better, noted Yaskowsky, who expects increasing economic opportunities and investment as the nation pulls out of the recession.
