Volunteer Hydration Outreach to the Homeless Wraps Up Two Weeks of Neighbors Helping Neighbors Beat the Heat

-

July 9, 2012 – (RealEstateRama) — The City of Norfolk sends a huge thank you to the non-profit groups, partner organizations, faith communities, Community Emergency Response Team members, City departments, and other volunteers who have been neighbors helping neighbors these last two weeks during this hot and humid stretch of weather. As a community we have had cooling stations, shelters opening their doors, services providing water and cool air in their lobbies, libraries offering a cool respite, recreation facilities providing water activities, and a variety of folks checking in on their neighbors and clients.

The most recent example occurred on Sunday, July 8, as Tabernacle Church of Norfolk provided over 50 volunteers to help the City of Norfolk’s Office to End Homelessness provide hydration outreach to the homeless and vulnerable on this hottest day of the year. After a quick training at Tabernacle Church, 14 teams spread across the city searching for persons who are homeless and anyone appearing in need or vulnerable. They were armed with over 1,000 bottles of water, directions to places where folks may be found, and instructions on how to engage persons on the streets as well as helpful tips on identifying and preventing heat related illness.
