NORFOLK, VA – January 4, 2011 – (RealEstateRama) — Beginning Monday, January 3, families and individuals who are imminent danger of losing their primary source of heat or have no heat at all may be eligible for further assistance with their heating costs through the Crisis Assistance Program.
Crisis Assistance currently helps residents pay for their utility deposits, and repair or replacement of heating equipment. This additional “fuel” component assists with payment of primary fuel or primary heat utility bills.
To qualify, households with gas or electricity heat must have a cut off notice. Those who heat with propane, oil or kerosene must be either low on, or out of heating fuel. Eligible households include those that did not receive Fuel Assistance, or that have exhausted their benefit amount. The maximum gross monthly income to qualify is $1,174 before taxes for a household of one, and $2,389 before taxes for a family of four.
The Crisis Assistance Program is funded by the federal Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program block grant and serves approximately 100,000 households each year across the Commonwealth. For more information about the Crisis Assistance Program or to request an application, call the Norfolk Department of Human Services at 664-6035.
